Default An Unseen Guide

A New Day eDevotional
An Unseen Guide

Psalm 139:7-10, “Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.”

In the first part of this century, Sir Ernest Shackleford began his voyage to the Antarctic. It was his dream to cross the twenty-one hundred miles of wasteland by dogsled. He didn’t make it that far, however. On the way his ship was stopped by an ice pack and sank. He and his men had to trudge over drifting ice floes trying to reach the nearest land, nearly two hundred miles away and the nearest human outpost was nearly twelve hundred miles away. They towed behind them a lifeboat weighing nearly one ton. With dwindling supplies, when they finally reached waters clear enough of ice to navigate, they faced waves as high as ninety feet. Finally they reached South Georgia Island, only to find that it had never been crossed before. When they ultimately reached their destination, almost seven months after they began the journey, they were so bedraggled their friends did not recognize them. To a man, however, those who had completed the journey reported that they felt the presence of an unseen One who guided them on their hazardous trek. These men knew they were not alone. In our Scripture lesson today, the Psalmist realized that no matter where he was—whether in the highest of heights, or the deepest of depths, God was ever present with him.

So, my friend, no matter where you are today, no matter challenges you may be facing, rest assured—you are not alone. With the same assurance Sir Ernest Shackleford and his men realized, as well as David who penned the words of this Psalm, our heavenly Father is with you to guide you through the most inhospitable paths that lay before you, and usher you safely, from the perils of your present course into the peaceful assurance He offers to all, with this new day.
