Default How To Rest

HOW TO REST

Most of don’t rest because we don’t know how to rest. Resting is not scanning the computer or looking through our phone. We take a break from work only to check our personal emails and social media. That is not rest. We are still using our brains when we do this. On the weekend, we try to catch up at home running errands and cleaning house. Rushing around and thinking about all we have to do is not rest. How do we rest? We rest by being alone with God in worship and praise. Being with people we love. Getting physical rest. Absorbing God’s beautiful world. Rest was so important to God that He created a commandment about it. The more time we spend with God, the more relaxed we will be. Let’s set aside one day a week, as God calls us to do, to rest.

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 20:9-10 “Work and get everything done during six days each week, but the seventh day is a day of rest to honor the LORD your God” (NCV)

Exodus 20:9-10 “You have six days in which to do your work, but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to Me.” (GN)

ACTION STEPS:
1. Write about when you need to rest.
2. List the things you can do to rest.
3. Remember worship is a part of resting.
4. Be sure to take time alone with God when you rest.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, help us to remember to rest. We are so wired up all the time about things we need to do. Taking a full day of rest is not something we feel we can do. However, You command us to do it. Starting this week, help us to remember to rest and spend time worshiping You. We want to rest our minds and bodies. Help us to resist temptation to do any work. We trust in You and want to do Your will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

REMEMBER:
Rest means no work. None at all. We have six days for work. That is enough.

Exodus 23:12a “You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working.” (NLT)

“God, in his goodness, created rest because he considers it as important as work.” Pastor Rick Warren

Isaiah 56:2b “Blessed are those who honor my Sabbath days of rest and keep themselves from doing wrong.” (NLT)

If we don’t slow down and rest, God will slow us down.

FOCUS: Psalm 127:2 “It’s useless to rise early and go to bed late, and work your worried fingers to the bone. Don’t you know God enjoys giving rest to those He loves?” (MES)

We stay sober and clean together - one day at a time!
God says that each of us is worth loving.
