We learn in one of two ways: we listen to what's been said and are able to learn by doing that, or we go out on our own trying to learn how things work. In recovery we are ones who have chosen to try to find out on our own. Just because we can do this doesn't mean it's good for us. There are many hazards that come along with doing this that we all find out about along the way. One we're quite familiar with is this left all of us wanting. It was like there was an emptiness that no matter how hard we tried none of us could fill, nothing worked and this brought all of us to despair. That's where we all begin recovery and discover we can still learn by listening instead of choosing to find out on our own. Once we learn how to do things in this way it uniquely qualifies us as someone who has tried to learn in both ways. We now become useful at being able to be used to help others who are trying to do what we did that didn't work for us, also it means that from now on we'll always be a work in progress
