Sitting there at our first AA speakers meeting listening to some guy talk who doesn't even look anything like us. We hear him say about his life and it doesn't have anything to do with our life. Then he starts talking about things that are just like us, things about ourselves we didn't want to admit to, things we thought only we had ever known about ourselves. We wonder, how does he know these things. We've never heard anyone else speak about these things. Such is the power of recovery, to allow us to come face to face with ourselves through someone else. This allows us to be able to hear what we need to hear. Now the actions we need to take can begin if we are willing to do them. Many of us are forced to that first meeting, we go not knowing what to expect, the last thing we expected to find was to see ourselves there.
