There is nothing that's new about recovery even though when we get here it will seem new to all of us, but recovery itself is not new. Recovery is not even an invention; all of the principles that go into making recovery what it is were not invented by recovery, they are just used and borrowed from somewhere else. What is different about recovery that makes it seem new to all of us is the idea that we can have our own understanding of something greater than ourselves and call it whatever we want to. What is nice about being able to do this is it frees us of any prejudices we may have about this which would keep us from being able to be in recovery. Turns out it really does matter what you call this. What is really important is knowing that we have our own understanding that none of us were comfortable enough before recovery to talk about or even acknowledge we had. From being able to do this from being in recovery we now see this being done all around us by people who also have their own understanding that works for them and we'll have no problem with this even if it's different from our own because we now know how important it is for all of us to be able to do this for ourselves.
