Words by a Swimming Pool
Words by a Swimming Pool For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Mark 8:36 Recommended Reading Mark 8:34-38 [ http://iz3.me/ipHn2zeTx1A1 ] When Bill Bright moved to Los Angeles in the 1940s, he met Elwain Steinkamp, a real estate developer who built the prestigious Bel Air community. One day beside his swimming pool, Steinkamp told Bill, “Material success is not where you find happiness. There are rich people all over this city who are the most miserable people you’ll ever meet. Knowing and serving Jesus Christ is what’s really important. He’s the only way to find happiness.” Mr. Steinkamp went on to quote Jesus: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” Listen to Today's Radio Message [ http://iz3.me/jpHn2zeTx1A1 ] Those words made a deep impact on Bill, and shortly afterward he gave his life to Christ. Almost immediately he began winning others to Jesus, and he went on to become one of the most powerful evangelistic personalities of the twentieth century.1 Don’t underestimate the influence you can have by saying a few words for the Lord to someone by a swimming pool—or wherever else you find them. The kingdom of God is growing all around us, and we don’t want anyone to miss it. - Michael Richardson, Amazing Faith: The Authorized Biography of Bill Bright (Colorado Springs: WaterBrook Press, 2000), 12-24.
