Default Agony, Anguish and Courage

Agony, Anguish and Courage

Luke 22:44-45: “And being in anguish, [Jesus] prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” (v.44).

“I wish it were all over,” confided a friend. “This is such an agonizing journey.” For several years my friend has been confronting the debilitating effects of an unhealthy past and how it has contributed to her workaholic present. The process has produced considerable anguish. Although she is committed to growth, she frequently feels alone.

But she is not alone. Jesus understands. According to Luke, Jesus suffered greatly as he faced the prospect of the cross. It was an agonizing experience, yet his friends left him alone to struggle.

When we experience detours triggered by bad memories and strong self-defeating habits, we may be tempted to abandon the journey. Remembering Jesus’ commitment and courage in the midst of pain and anguish, helps us to walk through the struggle with him.

Lord, sometimes I’m in such pain I feel nauseous.
But healing is more important to me right now than avoiding my fear.
I realize you knew anguish and yet, walked courageously through it.
Please help me to do the same.

Joan C. Webb
