Default Dirty Birds

A New Day eDevotional

Dirty Birds

James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

There was a little old lady, who every morning stepped onto her front porch, raised her arms to the sky, and shouted: “Praise the Lord!” One day an atheist moved into the house next door. He became irritated at the little old lady. Every morning he would step onto his front porch after her and yell: “There is no Lord!” Time passed with the two of them carrying on this way every day. One morning, however, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch and shouted: “Praise the Lord! Please Lord, I have no food and I am starving; provide for me, oh Lord!” The next morning she stepped out onto her porch and there were two huge bags of groceries sitting there. “Praise the Lord! She cried out. “He has provided me with groceries!” Her atheist neighbor immediately jumped out of the hedges and shouted: “There is no Lord. I bought those groceries!” The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted: “Oh praise the Lord! He has provided me with groceries—and made the devil pay for them!”

Listen friend, so often we, through a prejudicial mindset, restrict the ability of God to provide for us, by not fully appreciating the conduits God can use to fully meet our needs. We must understand that God is truly our source. As our text today indicates, “Every good gift . . . cometh down from the Father.” But the means by which He provides can be varied. In 1 Kings 17 God fed Elijah the prophet with a raven. What’s odd about that you may ask? A raven is a “dirty bird”—the most unlikely vessel to be used to feed a prophet. But God did it to illustrate that the vessels He sometimes chooses to bless us with, may be outside our bounds, but never outside His. Today, God desires to bless you and meet your needs. Expand your mindset to receive from whatever vessel He chooses, but in the end you will know that He ultimately is your source; to bring new provision into your life, at the beginning of this new day!

We stay sober and clean together - one day at a time!
